Discount Calculator, Percent Off, Stacked Discounts & Tax

Calculate the final price after one or two percent discounts and sales tax, and see exactly how much you save.

—

Formula

Final = price × (1 − d1) × (1 − d2) × (1 + tax). Two stacked discounts multiply rather than add: 30% + 10% off leaves 0.70 × 0.90 = 63% of the price, a real discount of 37%, not 40%.

Examples

InputResult
$80, 25% off$60.00 · save $20.00
$120, 30% + 10% off$75.60 · save $44.40 (37% off, not 40%)
$59.99, 15% off + 8% tax$55.07 out the door

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is 30% + 10% off not 40% off?

Each discount applies to the already-reduced price. 30% off leaves 70%; the second 10% comes off that 70%, leaving 63%, a combined 37% discount. Stores count on shoppers overestimating stacked deals.

Is the 'extra 25% off sale prices' deal good?

An extra 25% off a 50%-off item gives 62.5% off total, not 75%. Compare the final dollar price with other stores rather than the stacked percentages.

Does tax apply before or after the discount?

After, in most US states sales tax is charged on the discounted price, so a discount also saves you the tax on the amount knocked off.
