Investment calculators are often compared as if one were simply better, but each answers a different question. ROI measures total return over a period you choose. CAGR restates that return as a steady annual rate, which is what makes two investments of different lengths comparable. Dividend yield describes income, not total return. Real return subtracts inflation. Cap rate describes a property's income against its value.
The mistake that costs the most money is comparing a nominal return against a real one, or comparing two ROI figures that cover different time spans. A return over three years and a return over ten years are not comparable until both are annualised.
For a like-for-like comparison use the CAGR calculator; to see what a return is worth after inflation use the real return calculator; for income planning use the dividend yield calculator and the systematic withdrawal calculator.
ROI for a single holding period you care about; CAGR when you need to compare across different periods or against a benchmark.
Because it removes the part of the nominal return that merely kept pace with rising prices. Over long periods the gap between nominal and real is substantial.
Not necessarily. Yield is income divided by price, so a yield can rise because the price fell. Check the payout's sustainability before treating it as reliable income.
